Spring
Joyful spring has arrived,
The birds welcome it with their happy songs,
And the brooks(小溪) in the gentle breezes(微风)
Flow(流动) with a sweet murmur(细声).
The sky is covered with a black mantle(斗篷),
Thunder and lightning announce(宣告) a storm.
When they are silent, the birds
Take up again their harmonious(和谐悦耳的) songs.
And in the flower-rich meadow(草地),
To the gentle murmur of leaves and plants
The goatherd(牧羊人) sleeps, his faithful(忠实的) dog at his side.
To the merry sounds of a rustic(乡村的) bagpipe(风笛)
Nymphs(小仙女) and shepherds dance in their beloved(钟爱的) spot(地点)
When spring appears in its brilliance(光辉).
Summer
Under the merciless(残忍的) summer sun
Languishes(衰弱无力) man and flock; the pine(松木) tree burns,
The cuckoo begins to sing and at once
Join in the turtle-doves(斑鸠) and the goldfinch(金翅雀)
A gentle breeze blows, but Boreas(北风之神)
Joins battle(斗争) suddenly with his neighbour,
And the shepherd weeps(哭泣) because overhead
Hangs the dreaded(非常可怕的) storm, and his destiny(命运).
His tired limbs(肢) are robbed of their rest
By his fear(害怕) of the lightning and the heavy thunder
And by the furious(狂怒的) swarm(一群) of flies(苍蝇) and hornets(黄蜂).
Alas(唉), his fears are well founded(建立):
There is thunder and lightning in the sky and the hail(冰雹一样的)
Cuts down the lofty(高傲的) ears of corn.
Autumn
The peasant(农民) celebrates with song and dance
The pleasure of the rich harvest,
And full of the liquor(烈酒) of Bacchus(酒神巴克斯)
They finish their merrymaking with a sleep.
All are made to leave(与…告别) off singing and dancing
By the air which now mild(温柔的) gives pleasure
And by the season which invites many
To enjoy a sweet sleep.
At dawn(破晓时分) the hunters
With horns(兽角) and guns and dogs leave their homes:
The beast(四脚兽) flees(迅速逃离); they follow its traces(足迹).
Already terrified(恐吓) and tired by the great noise
Of the guns and the dogs, and wounded(受伤) it tries
Feebly(无力) to escape(逃跑), but exhausted(筋疲力尽的) dies.
Winter
Frozen and shivering(哆嗦) in the icy snow,
In the strong blasts(一阵风) of a terrible wind
To run stamping(踩踏) one’s feet at every step
With one’s teeth chattering(牙齿打战) through the cold.
To spend the quiet and happy days by the fire
Whilst(而) outside the rain soaks(浇透) everyone.
To walk on the ice with slow steps
And go carefully for fear of falling.
To go in haste(仓促), slide(滑) and fall down:
To go again on the ice and run,
Until the ice cracks(裂缝) and opens.
To hear leaving their iron-gated(铁门) house
Sirocco(非洲吹来的热风), Boreas and all the winds in battle:
This is winter, but it brings joy.
